Ill Manors trailer analysis

1) Some of the key conventions would involve that a trailer is not very long, usually just 2 to 3 minutes long. It often has non-diagetic music or theme song which is linked to the film itself. It would have to include a release and airing date so the interested audience know. Introduction to the protagonist and antagonist is also key. The institution and production teams would also be presented. A brief into the plot and the editing is usually very fast and to the beats of the music. Establishing shots to show the setting and where the film is being filmed at. Social media and websites to gain awareness. Most importantly, Synergy between different institutions and productions to create extra promotion.

2) Sometimes the production company can't raise the money to produce the trailers so the distributors would generate some money and make it. Sometimes trailers are made to market the film to audience instead of just advertising it to a mass audience. Trailers are shown on popular websites, mostly on YouTube because it's the most popular video sharing website out there. Sometimes even shown in the cinema before the start of films of similar genre.

3) Ill Manors trailer is only 1 minute and 43 seconds long which is quite short of a trailer as usually it goes on for 2-3 minutes so it breaks that convention. It is also quite controversial as it shows establishing shots of London but the very rubbish and run-down parts and underground grungy streets. There is strong synergy as the song being used is from Plan B who uses the song to promotes the film and the film in return also promotes the song. There is two songs being used in the film and both describe the narrative and what is going on. The editing is also used with a variety of shots and it's very fast paced and is very unique as different filters and colour gradings are used. It shows very fast faced cuts which adds excitement but doesn't give away too much as it's almost too quick to put anything together.

4) The target audience of Ill Manors would most likely be adults and mainly youth from the ages of 14-27 as the film consists of constant elements of strong violence, drug use and sexual scenes which would only be appropriate for people aged 18 or over. The film is evidently aimed at males only because of the significant use of sex, explicit language, drugs and violence which makes it more appealing to males than females. Also, the music and even the producer makes it easier for males to relate to than female audiences because males are more likely to be interested in the genre of rap, grime and hip hop.

The clear demographic group is D/E because it is clear that mainstreamers and strugglers would fall into that category and that's mainly where the characters would fall into also because they are struggling to survive. An interesting thing added to the trailer is the text that some environments are harder to survive than others which relates back to the mainstream and strugglers demographic.

The film trailer gives a few clues as to the information and genre the film is for example it shows lives of people involvement of drugs, gangs and violence. Although the whole trailer is only 1:43 minutes long, the audience would get an idea on who the protagonist and antagonist in the films are. It is very key to show the actors faces in the trailer so the audience get familiar and know if they recognise the faces because they are more likely to watch a film if they know who the actors are.

5) In the trailer, there is a clear use of the iconic and traditional view of London and that is being used to show off the genre but also the nature of it. It also promotes the film because the audience are familiar with the city as it's the best city in the world. In focus we see the dirty streets but in the bigger background, the big city of Canary Wharf and London. Also, the dress sense of each character signify their backgrounds and upbringing. Young males wearing snapbacks and tracksuits give the impression that these people fit into the demographic of the D and E's. This information gives us that the people who would watch this film would also be in the D and E socio-economic demographic and this includes action, drama and urban life. The controversial shot of the Olympic stadium but also the streets of poverty and run-down shows that the film is about urban life. This helps identify the genre of film which is urban crime drama and shows that it will present realistic viewpoints of life in London.

The various camera shots and angles used such as extreme close ups and establishing shots are to emphasis props and facial expression and to get familiar with the actors and characters. The fast face editing also emphasises this. For example the extreme close ups of Ed when he is in prison and the cocaine being snorted by one of the characters. There is different filters and colour gradings used to make the trailer more significant such as black and white and the flashbacks being in this grainy filter, this gives it a film-noir twist with crime, drama.
