Ill Manors: Broadcast platform

DVD Extra

1) Plan B wanted to fully show that teenagers who might be viewed as rebellious and troublemakers that they aren't that bad and just need to be sympathised with once in a while. He basically wants to show the public why these teenagers behave the way they do and he he practically wants to have direct address and leave an emotional mark on the audience whilst watching films which is why he uses very explicit and graphic scenes such as when Chris kills the little kid towards the end for killing his little sister. Also he mentioned that they filmed in an actual crack house because firstly they were on a budget and secondly because he wanted everything to be legit and authentic. Nothing was really staged as they actually filmed on location of these streets. He wanted the audience and viewers of Ill Manors to connect with the characters and create an emotional connection and feel what they are going through as this was what he was trying to achieve.

Plan B also wanted to make the film which accurately represents the youth lifestyle that young people are living through and he did that very well. He really focused on subverting the stereotype of people who live in council houses and especially the people who live there, the chavs. He chose to focus on chavs and people who live there because he thinks that it accurately represents all young kids in London. He further wants to reason with the actions in the London riots which I don't understand because he is contradicting himself because he first says he doesn't support the riots but his music video and film etc. almost promote it. He also wanted to demonstrate how the youth are very misunderstood within the society but he didn't want to make the violence too glamours too.

He further emphasised whilst making the film that how if you take opportunities and chances for young people that it will lead them to participate in drugs and violence as that is the only other way to undertake because every other road is closed for them and it's the only way out. Plan B had a clear sense of what he wanted to promote and he explained why the youth are seen very negatively in society and especially the media. The producer himself mentioned how he wanted to emphasis that point and make it entertainment for the youth but also for the older audience.

2) Plan B wanted to show life from a different perspective by emphasising the realism of the suburban areas which are not usually associated with the upper classes and more fortunate people. In the film he used very qualified actors like Riz Ahmed who made appearances on a number of different other crime and underground films. He decided to use other actors who weren't that qualified in acting to give it that more sense of street life and realism. Plan B also used East London in order to help the audience understand the background from where the society came from and how it is and how it helped shape his experience from his past events in life.

Plan B made a short film in 2008 to help convince investors and distributors to give him money for his film and to gain experience as a director. He originally made a 20 page script and was told to shorten it down to 5 pages and as a result of that, he couldn't condense it so he made a rap song and almost a music video but it was very low budget but that helped him a lot to prove the realism of growing up in the ghetto. That experience helped him a lot in becoming a better director. The short film was then broadcasted on Channel 4 which was a massive outbreak because it then helped it gain more attention and pushed him on to do the film. The soundtrack for the film 'Ill Manors' is a story for the film and Plan B very cleverly fixed it so song matches too to help his dream become a reality.

Whilst on the set to film Ill Manors, the cast and crew members were actually in contact with a lot of hood rats and gang members which further emphasises how well the location they picked was. Often these hood rats and gang members would try to tell Plan B and the film crew to go away because this is their turf and they are almost trespassing.

Ill Manors was filmed and produced on a really low budget. Minuscule compared to Hollywood films. He said he dug deep into his own pockets to finance this film which shows great determination and also a massive risk because if the film failed then he would have made a very big loss and would suffer a lot. However he had strong confidence into his film crew and his actors to do their jobs and for him to produce a very meaningful film full of emotions. They obviously also didn't have state of the art technical equipment such as lighting kits and microphones which made it look very rigid and rough which gave it a more realistic view but it is obviously very hard to pull off a great film without good equipment and Plan B managed to.

3) The target audience is most certainly aimed at those who were involved in the London riots in 2011 and those who know it feels to be an outcast as it would be easiest for them to relate to the film and characters. The D/E demographic especially and the reformers and strugglers because they understand everything as they live that and that's their everyday life. It could argued that the target audience is AB because it would be trying to alter their view on the youth because they tend to view them very negatively. The uses and gratifications would be surveillance because it's informative and it tells the audience how each and every character is and that this is actual reality. The other one would be diversion because some of the audience would watch it for the mere entrainment and to watch something new.

4)
From the documentary, the movie most certainly achieved what Plan B aimed and wanted. He wanted to get as much realism as possible and he has achieved that. He chose very natural and real locations which showed the brutal nature of the environment. It showed a lot of honest that's for sure as it's showing how they actually look like rather than sugar coating it. He was using his own experiences to come up with everything which made it a lot more real and made a further connection with the audience.

The film is very successful in showing how and why young people act very negatively and for this reason that they are ignored in society. The film wanted to particularly show the audience that young people will end up in the drugs industry if they aren't given the chance to grow themselves as everyone else does.

The soundtrack in the film is very important as it is a mirror narrative and it tells the story of how some centres were being shut down so the youth are expected to go violent if something is taken away from them, it's human nature.

Broadcast/Online

1) SBTV is a web based video broadcasting corporation started off by teenager Jamal Edwards. He worked alone to deliver footage and music from renowned rappers like Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk and Dizzie Rascal. The channel began to get attention when it started broadcasting 'good' music and reporting interviews with already famous rappers and producers. SBTV also help launch Ed Sheeran's career. It launched it's own music producing label, Just Jam which is under Sony. Their first ever signing was a rapper from London who goes by the name of Maxsta. In 2012, they reached 100 million views across all their videos on YouTube.

The target audience is mainly teenagers who are interested in rap and grime music, age range from 13-21, 85% male. The demographics would be between C/D because it would first require constant access to internet and the people in that demographic are most likely to have that and would be interested in that sort of music. They would also be mainstreamers because they would listen to the most common rap and grime songs and they are people who like to keep up to date with the new trends and upcoming artists in the rap and music industry.

2) It opens up with one of the actors sneaking into the production room to talk to Ben Drew and get an interview with him for SBTV. The interview is very informal and uses very explicit language which makes it appealing to the adventurous and mainstream crown.

The use of explicit language is the main way in which the audience is attracted which are teenagers. Teenagers are more likely to use this language as it would kind of make them seem older and like adults. The start of the clip highlights this appeal to teenagers as the use of swearing and clothes like hoodies and snapbacks allows the teenagers to connect with the people in the interview as they are acting in a similar way to teenagers. The interviewer even said that they are forbidden to be here and they are trespassing which further emphasises that similar teenagers like him do the same and like to do illegal things.

3) Plan B is presented in his usual self I would assume because he seems very relaxed due to the immense amount of swearing and and the absence of respect. He could be seen in a very negative way as swearing is not seen to be a good feature in a wider society. He is on camera getting interviewed and you would assume that his actions should be a lot more polite and a lot more respectful than how he was in the whole duration of the interview.

However he is represented in a positive way because it shows his strong determination and confidence as he is sleeping in his office and in his shoes just to get the editing and post production of the film just right and how he wants, this shows us the audience that he is very dedicated to his work and a very determined producer and that he is very persistent. He is represented as a hard working individual as he is working hard to get the boost footage all together. He is shown to be very laid back and relaxed but also again serious as he's working non stop on this massive project of his.

Television

1) The Jonathan Ross show is a British talk show presented by Jonathan Ross. Ross had poor ratings due to a poor selection of guests. Jonathan Ross is a controversial media figure in the past due to the fact that in 2008, he made a guest appearance on The Russell Brand show, during the show, both of them had left messages on actor Andrew Sach's phone about his granddaughter. This story created a lot of complaints. The target audience for this interview would be older people, the show is on after watershed, meaning after 9o'clock.

2) The demographic group for this interview would definitely be between 35-45, this is due to the fact that Ben Drew gets political, he start's to talk about money and the government and how they're doing things wrong in society.

3) The Jonathan Ross show interviews many famous celebrities. The show is on every Saturday night and this means it will have many viewers as it is the weekend. The show has had old actors and politicians which would attract more middle-aged/middle-class people who have an interest in politics.

The audience appeal of the programme is that it is a comedy and give the uses and gratification of surveillance. E.g. the you want information on the celebrities and that what the show is really about and it also suppose be the celebrities who are endorsing something new and want to induce it to the audience and get what their opinion would be.

4) Plan B is represented as a role model icon on this show. This is as Ross states: 'Most interesting artist around', which takes importance of Plan B. Similarly, the listing of the qualities Plan B has: rapper, songwriter, actor and director shows how qualified and skilled he is. We all know that Plan B is against the prejudice against the youth; however, he is still able to see right from wrong.

Radio

1) BBC Radio 1 is a British radio station functioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts across many countries, specifying in modern and current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. It's predictable that Radio 1 has an estimate of 55,00 in 2014 listeners and it can also be digitally spread in many other countries.

2) BBC Radio 1’s target audience is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age groups, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33. The target audience of demographic of AB as most people listens to the radio in the car mostly.

3) Plan B promotes his film by consciously mentioning it through the interview even when he hasn't been questioned on it. He mentions that he had to complete shots of phones and mini sim chips which almost acts as behind the scenes footages and promotes the narrative of the film.

4) The representation of Plan B that we can find in this interview is that he is a very dedicated young man. He attempted to target his audience in the movie. He also mentioned the faith he has in his actors, as they were all unknown but he believed he would be able to turn them into successful and well-established artists. He frequently mentions the release date which is May 4th; this promotes when the audience will be able to go and see the movie which is targeting them.
